Finance Minister Delivers Mid-Year Budget.

Ken Ofori-Atta,minister responsible for finances will present the 2022 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament later today, July 25.

The Finance Minister was scheduled to deliver the address on Wednesday, July 13, but the date was changed due to the negotiations between government and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The postponement was to allow the government to possibly make some recommendations to the budget.

At that same time, the Minister is also expected to make his first official comments on this decision, after publicly stating that the country would not go to the IMF.

Ken Ofori-Atta will equally provide information on how revenue and expenditure had performed in the first half of the year and the country’s current budget deficit figures.

Ahead of that, some stakeholders have been sharing their expectations.

For instance, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mark Badu Aboagye, has urged government to use the review to sustain and improve upon the investor confidence generated by IMF’s visits.

From the Miniter, while Ghana has started to fare better on the international market following the government’s IMF announcement, it was important for the Finance Ministry to announce policies that will improve the local market as well.

“I think after the announcement of the IMF coming in, there has been some level of confidence in the Ghanaian economy, and this has reflected in the performance of our bonds in the international market. But we also have to look at the local factor, what can we do?

So, we’re expecting that the mid-year review we will rather also inspire more confidence in the economy, and that will come when there are proper policies that are being outlined to solve most of the challenges that we are having.

Clothings And Fuel Price Increase In The Uk.

Many Families are cutting back on fuel and clothing as rising prices make them question what they can afford, new figures suggest.

Petrol and diesel sales fell by 4.3% in June as prices at the pumps hit new records, monthly retail data shows.Clothing sales dropped by 4.7%, as UK inflation reached new highs.

Retailers told the Office for National Statistics the figures indicated people were cutting back on spending due to concerns over what they could afford.

Prices in the UK are currently rising at their fastest rate for more than 40 years.

Inflation – the rate at which prices rise – jumped to 9.4% in June, with the increasing cost of petrol and food putting pressure on households’ finances.

Although overall retail sales remain above their pre-pandemic levels, “the broader trend is one of decline”, said Heather Bovill at the ONS.

“Clothing purchases dipped along with household goods, with retailers suggesting consumers cutting back on spending due to higher prices and concerns around affordability,” she said.

On the more serious note ,Fuel sales fell back considerably with retailers reporting the record high prices at the pump hitting sales,” the deputy director for surveys and economic indicators added.

There comes as a new survey by the ONS found around 9 in ten adults continued to report a rise in their living costs over the past month.

Almost half (46%) of adults who pay energy bills found it difficult to afford them, up from 43% in the previous period, while 46% of adults said they would not be able to save any money in the next 12 months.

This data was collected in early July.

Fuel prices have soared in recent months, driven by the war in Ukraine and moves by a number of countries to reduce their dependence on Russian oil.

Average petrol prices rose by 18.1p per litre in June, the ONS said, the largest monthly rise on record. Diesel prices also soared by 12.7p per litre.

This led to the average family car costing more than £100 to fill up, according to the RAC.

However, the AA said this week that lower wholesale costs of fuel were leading to cheaper price at the pumps though they still remain much higher than last year.

Stocking up on sausage rolls

Food sales were the only area to see a boost in June, with volumes rising by 3.1% largely driven by the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee bank holiday celebrations.

After a fall in May, food sales picked up due to the Jubilee celebrations, but this was the only sector to report an increase,” Ms Bovill said.

Paul Dales, chief UK economist at research firm Capital Economics, said the jump in food sales “was surely due to people stocking up on sausages rolls, cakes and alcohol for jubilee street parties”.

But he added that the extra bank holiday “also appears to have meant people spent less time shopping for other items”, such as clothing and household goods.

Silvia Rindone, UK and Ireland retail leader at the accountancy firm EY, said: “Despite the long Jubilee bank holiday weekend at the start of June, today’s ONS retail sales data shows that consumers are feeling the pinch from the rising cost-of-living and are becoming more cautious about where and when they are spending.”

She also said retailers with robust plans to manage cost inflation are best placed to cope.

She added that companies need to ensure they address people’s concerns over what they can afford, such as by offering value for money.

Spanish Police Arrested Two Suspects Over $1.6M Wine Robbery At Spanish Hotel.

According Spanish police they have detained a pair of professional thieves accused of stealing more than $1.6 million worth of wine from a hotel in the south of the country.

The man and woman evaded capture for almost nine months before being arrested on the Montenegro-Croatia border on Tuesday for stealing 45 bottles of wine from the Atrio restaurant in Cáceres, western Spain, according to a statement from Spain's national police. The total value of the stolen wine was €1,648,500 (around $1.68 million) and one individual bottle was valued at €310,000, said police.

It took place on October 27, 2021 and was planned in "minute detail," with the thieves visiting the restaurant three times to prepare the raid, said officers. The suspects "showed a high level of professionalism, specialization and perfect planning," added the police statement.

Interrogators found that the woman booked into the Atrio hotel using a fake Swiss document, and had dinner in the restaurant with her male accomplice. Both suspects were then given a tour of the wine cellar by staff, which is a common occurrence, according to police. They then went up to their hotel room together, but the man left a few moments later and returned to the cellar.

The man got in using a stolen master key, and left a few minutes later with three large rucksacks filled with stolen wine, stuffed with hotel towels to cushion the bottles. While he was stealing the wine, the woman distracted staff by asking for some food to be prepared, police said, despite the fact that the kitchen was already closed.

On the next day , the staffs noticed the missing bottles the early morning, but the suspects had left the premises at around 5 a.m. The thieves left Spain a few days after the heist and moved around various European countries, making it difficult for agents to pinpoint their exact location, said police. But authorities finally caught up with them entering Croatia from Montenegro at the Karasovi Sutorina border crossing.

The police hailed the "perfect coordination" between national and international investigators from authorities including Interpol. At the time of his arrest the male suspect had two more warrants outstanding from a court in Madrid, said police. The most valuable bottle was an 1806 Château D'Yquem, José Polo, co-owner and sommelier of the restaurant, told Decanter magazine in November 2021.

There was a major upset at the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) national executive elections, as lawyer Justine Kodua Frimpong uncrowned

incumbent General Secretary, John Boadu by 313 votes.

Kodua polled 2,837 votes as against John Boadu's 2,524 votes, to register victory, while five-time lucky, Stephen Ayesu Ntim, left his challengers far behind with a massive 4,014 votes. His closest challenger, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, registered 1,010 votes, with Kwabena Abankwa-Yeboah, highly tipped to impress, in a distant third with 294 votes.

Substantive Women's Organiser of the NPP, Kate Gyamfua, is expected to be confirmed officially to have retained her post after running home with a landslide victory.

Gyamfua polled a 620 votes to beat Hajia Sawudata who polled 32 votes and Ellen Ama Daaku, who polled 9 votes.

Two Miners Lost Their lives At Mano Muano(Amansie South District -Ashanti.

Suddenly, Two people have drowned in a galamsey pit at Manso Muano in the Amansie South District of the Ashanti region.

It occurred on Monday, 11 July 2022, when the victims went to mine for gold in the abandoned galamsey pit. The Assembly Member for the area, Acheampong Duku George, who confirmed the incident, told Class News’ Elisha Adarkwah that one of the victims, Abena Agyeiwah, drowned while washing the gold she had mined.

The Assembly Member for the area continually said the second victim, his name given as ‘Taller’, attempted to rescue her and in the process drowned.

Their bodies have been retrieved by the police and deposited at St. Martin’s Hospital morgue at Agroyesum for preservation.

The police at Manso Adubea has began investigations into the incident very well . This should also serve as an advise to all illegal miners to stop for their own good.

The Social Media Company Twitter has sued the American billionaire Elon Musk in an effort to force him to follow through with his deal to buy the social media company.

The lawsuit, filed in the Delaware Court of Chancery on Tuesday, comes after Musk said in a letter to Twitter's top lawyer late Friday that he wants to stop the blockbuster forty four billion dollars acquisition agreement

The billionaire lawyer alleged in Friday's letter that Twitter is "in material breach of multiple provisions" of the deal, claiming the company has withheld data Musk requested in order to evaluate the number of bot and spam accounts on the platform. The social Media Company (Twitter)legal team hit back in a letter on Monday, calling Elon Musk attempted termination "invalid and wrongful," claiming that Musk himself had violated the agreement and demanding that he follow through with the deal.

Police arrested two suspected ritualists with human head in kasoa

The Police on Monday arrested two young men with a “fresh” male human head.

The two, suspected to be ritual murderers, were arrested at Kasoa in the Ga South Municipality.

They were arrested after their vehicle crashed and was sent to the Weija District Command.

A police source told the Ghana News Agency that one of the suspects was a Taxi Driver.

The source said the suspects were three, however, one fled as soon as the police opened the vehicle and saw the human head.

It said the suspects were being interrogated by the police.

The source said they had denied knowledge of the origin of the head, which had blood oozing from it.

Meanwhile, the head has been deposited at the morgue.

168 NPP members defect to NDC over failed promises and economic hardship

About 168 supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at Asene Akroso Manso Constituency in the Eastern Region have crossed carpets to join the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The 168 defected members are all residents of Asene Akroso Manso, a stronghold of the NPP.

According to them, the decision to leave the NPP was borne out of negligence from the NPP-led government towards the development of the area and the failure to fulfill its gargantuan promises to the Ghanaians.

The defected NPP members said the government has disappointed them coupled with economic hardship in the country and failure to create jobs for the youth.

They stated that the party promised to secure job opportunities for them in various sectors of the economy during the 2016 campaign and hence worked hard for the party to win power and retained same in 2020, however after almost seven (7) years in power the leadership of the party has failed to honour its promise to them.

"After winning power, the leadership of the party has failed to give us a job. The most painful of it is that some of our colleagues who have certificates for various opportunities had to pay bribes before they were employed.

"NPP has deceived us. When we came to power, only a few people are enjoying it. We are all NPP members but we have defected with our households and family to NDC because the government has deceived us," the aggrieved NPP members said.

70% of Ghanaians say the country is heading in wrong direction

The second national tracking poll by Global InfoAnalytics from the sixteen regions of the country has concluded that 67 per cent of respondents say the country is heading in the wrong direction.

“On the question of whether voters believe the country is heading in the right direction or wrong direction, only 25% were of the view that the country is heading in the right direction with 70

% saying it is heading in the wrong direction,” the survey said.

Regarding the flagbearership elections of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) the poll saw a remarkable fight back by Alan Kojo Kyeremanten in the race to lead the NPP in 2024 as he came from behind to lead Dr Mahamudu Bawumia by36% to 33%. Dr Bawumia had a commanding lead in the January 2022 polls where led Alan 40% to 28%.

The poll saw Alan Kyeremanten sweep the critical regions to take the lead. In what was a reversal of fortune, Alan Kyeremanten wins all the regions except Northern, North East, Upper West and Upper East regions.

In the race to lead the NDC, HE John Mahama continues to increase his lead over his rivals, the former minister of finance Dr Kwabena Dufour and Kojo Bonsu, former mayor of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly. John Mahama is backed by 57% of voter, Dr Dufour, 12% and Kojo Bonsu 4%.

The poll also shows the president’s job approval rating declining from 34% in January 2022 to 27% in April. 67% of voters disapprove the job performance of the president, resulting in net approval rating of 40% negative.

Madam Rita Offin , a 63-year-old mother of seven, is among hundreds of pupils who have gained admission to various Senior High Schools (SHS) across Ghana now.

The oldster , who has gained admission at Christ The King Senior High School (CKC) at Obuasi, started her studies on Monday, April 11, 2022. Madam Offin sat for the Basic Education Certificate Examination(BECE).

The decision to return to the classroom, according to her, was informed by the challenges her trade has been faced with as someone who cannot read nor write.

Despite being ridiculed from the beginning, she stood against all odds to begin in class four at age 57 at Independence School Brahabebome, Obuasi.

According to her , in an interview with Adom News‘ Isacc K. Normanyo on the new phase of her education, she indicated she hopes for nothing but the best.

She stated she will not be hindered or worried about any ridicule or whatsoever she will be subjected to, adding long life and strength are all she prays to God for.

The assistant headmaster in charge of administration, James Kwaku Brefo, said she was going to be a role model for her fellow students at C.K.C.

Robbers have bagged in the Bible Expository Temple Assemblies God Church at Awutu Bereku in the Central region of Ghana. From the information we had from Our reporters, the invaders made away with all the musical instruments including keyboard, sound Mixer, and cordless microphones.

A very young palm wine tapper who is 38 years of age , who stays at Gomoa Afranse in the Central Region, has been arrested by Axim Police for his selling his own child who is 16-year-old to a fetish priest, Nana Tanor Kwaw at Ayisakro near Axim in the Nzema , Western Region Of Ghana .

The gospel truth of matter is that the palm wine tapper, who is known in his area of residence as Kwabena, went to the shrine of a fetish priest early Friday morning March 4, at around 7:15 am to use his son for money rituals for his own benefit.

After realizing he cannot obey the rules of the money rituals known in Ghanaian dialect as ‘sikaduro’, he got a changed of mind that he rather wants to sell the boy.

The Chief fetish priest fabricated interest and asked him to go and bring the boy.

Immediately he left, the priest drove to the Axim police station to report the matter.

When the police had the horrible prompt,They went with the priest and acted as organ traders who want to buy the boy from the priest.

The police, acting as organ traders , went to the priest’s shrine with a bag packed with papers as money.

When they got there, Kwabena was already there ready to sell his son.

After a few minutes of bargaining for GHC500,000, the police handed over the bag.

The money was handed over to Kwabena and then took the bag to count the money, he was captured and arrested by the police.The case is currently at the Axim police station pending further interrogation. Gob bless the Priest and Ghana police for the good works.

The migration has taken place in just a period of one week . The Russian violation began just last Thursday, As the BBC’s Lewis Goodall voiced out: The last time such incident occurred was 2015 it involved 1..3 million refugees, As compared to this year’s crisis in it early stage it will surely surpassed the numbers from Ukraine in a week.”

A Ghanaian based man from then northern part of Ghana, Walewale to be precise has a wedding invitation of marrying four women a day has sparked so many controversies on the internet.

The groom-to-be is been known in the community as N’yaaba Abudu Nkrumah Yiri Duu. His brides-to-be are; John Ama, N’giwani Lariba, Issaka Nabla and Alobgiya Lariba

Five die , others seriously injured in an accident at AYINASIN

Five persons on board a Toyota Hiace bus have been confirmed dead in an accident at Anyinasin along the Accra- Kumasi highway on Thursday morning.

The dead include three males and two females.Several others who sustained serious injuries are receiving medication at the Osino and Kyebi government hospitals.

The accident occurred when a speeding Toyota Corolla travelling from the Kumasi direction of the highway attempted to drive past a stationary truck in the middle of the road to the opposite lane.

The Corolla collided with a Nissan pathfinder with a trial plate number DV 5043B-21 driven by one Ransford Nuamah, a Police officer.

The Toyota Hiace with a registration number GC 7230-21 which was driving behind Toyota Corolla also crashed into the two vehicles and somersaulted.

Kyebi Divisional Motor Traffic and Transport Directorate (MTTD)Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police Henry Agyemang who confirmed the incident said the Police have begun interrogations into the case.

The DSP advised motorists to be extra careful, especially when riding in the night. They should make sure they put on their helmets and lights.

The Union of Transport Operators have spoken that starting from Monday, February 7, transport fares will be increased by 30%. Speaking in an interview with Accra-based Citi News, the Public relation officer (PRO)of the Concerned Drivers Association, David Agboado, disclosed that passengers should expect an upward movement of transport fares, starting from February 7, after a meeting with the sector Minister, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah.

“On Thursday, we met at TUC, GPRTU headquarters, and we have decided to increase the transport fares by 30%. The measures we used to reach this decision are; the current increase in fuel prices, increase in the price of items we use, government charges amongst others. That is what we are going to charge after seeing the Minister on Monday”.The decision to increase fuel prices follows a meeting between some 16 transport unions on Thursday, February 3, 2022. The meeting was to discuss the recent increment in fuel prices, and the followed impact on commercial transport operators.The transport unions included the Ghana Private Roads Transport Union, Progressive Transport Owners Association and the Concerned Drivers Association.

Over the past count of weeks, there have been a consistent increase in the price of fuel at the pumps, a situation many drivers have described as hard -boiled . According to the concerned drivers, the increments affect their profit margins leading to hardship in their individual livelihoods.

Reacting to the recent increment on Tuesday, the Executive Secretary of the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC), Mr. Duncan Amoah, told them that the reintroduction of the Price Stabilisation and Recovery Levies (PSRL) by the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), is an unkind decision.

According to him, the move by the NPA’ decision will affect consumers, and pose economic difficulties for them.

“What it means in simple terms is that your fuel prices will go up by that margin. 16 pesewas for petrol, 14 pesewas for diesel, 14 pesewas for LPG. We think this is very unkind and badly timed. Insensitive to the extent that, you have for the first time in 28 years, where crude prices have crossed 90 dollars. Mostly in January, crude prices decelerate or decline. You see prices drop.

On January 31, the Institute of Energy Security (IES), predicted that fuel prices are expected to go up by 25 pesewas per litre from February 1, due to an impending suspension of the Price Stabilisation and Recovery Levy (PSRL).

True to the predictions by the IES, indications at the various pumps on Tuesday morning, February 1, showed marginal increases in the price of fuel. Reacting to this, scores of consumers bemoaned the situation, and urged government to intervene accordingly

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Sekondi Takoradi Metropolis has been arrested by the Western Regional Police Command on Thursday for an alleged motor traffic offence.

The (MCE) who is Abdul-Mumin Issah is said to have verbally release assaults on the police officer who was performing his lawful duty at that moment .

Mr Abdul-Mumin Issah has been charged on three counts of Assault of a public officer, Offensive conduct conducive to breaches of the peace and perturbing the peace in a public place contrary to Sections 205, 207 and 298, respectively, of the Criminal and Other Offences Act of 1960, Act 29.

The Command said he has also been charged for dangerous driving contrary to Section 1 of Act 683 of 2004 as amended by Act 761 of 2008.

Mr Abdul-Mumin Issah was driving a Toyota Land Cruiser with a registrated number GE 5615-20 is alleged to have driven terribly and negligently while approaching a police checkpoint at the Kwasimintsim cemetery on Wednesday, February 2, 2022.

“When one of the police officers on duty ventured to stop him, he verbally offended and threatened him,” the Command said.

He will be summon before the court on Friday, February 4, 2022.
