The Spanish club Barcelona have made some world-class additions to their squad this summer. They’re reportedly navigating a financial crisis, but their summer transfer activity has been quite unhinged. They’ve signed Franck Kessie, Andreas Christensen, Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski and Jules Kounde this summer.

The will also need to offload quite a few players to balance their wage bill now. As per reports, the Catalans owe around €17 million in deferred payments to Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong, who has been heavily linked with an exit.

8. Franck Kessie – €260,385 per week

Franck Kessie is one of the best box-to-box midfielders in the game right now. Miralem Pjanic’s €60 million move to Barcelona did not really work out. After starting just six La Liga games in his debut season at the Camp Nou, he was shipped out on loan to Besiktas for the 2021-22 season. Pjanic is now back in Catalonia and wants to be a part of Xavi Hernandez’s plans.

The Spanish club Barcelona has still not been able to register all their summer transfer signees because of the economic situation within the club at the moment. The Spanish giants have activated three levers already but the La Liga authorities do not consider it enough to register all signings made by Barca this summer.

The club has called upon some players to reduce their salaries in other to cut their wage bill down. Some players have also been made available by the club in the transfer market in other to raise some income to support the club's financial situation.

The have decided to sell some first-team players within the club to raise money before the close of the transfer market this summer. Aubameyang, Memphis Depay and Frenkie De Jong have been offered to Chelsea as Thomas Tuchel continues with his rebuilding.

One of the Youth graduate Oscar Mingueza has completed a move to Celta Vigo on a free transfer. Riqui Puig and Neto are close to joining LA Galaxy and Bournemouth respectively.

And Miralem Pjanic is likely to stay after the player and his agent agreed on a pay cut and less playing time at the club.

The only two players that have refused to find a club are Samuel Umtiti and Martin Braithwaite. Head Coach Xavi Hernandez has made it emphatically clear to the duo that they are not part of his plans going forward but the two players are not willing to leave the club until their contract is done.

According to reports from Spain, Samuel Umtiti and Martin Braithwaite has been told by the club official to find new clubs before the end of August 31st. Barcelona is willing to terminate their contracts if they refuse to leave the club. Martin Braithwaite has received offers from Saudi but the Denish striker has no intentions of leaving Barcelona.

Didier Drogba missed out on the Ivorian Football Federation Presidency.

Didier Drogba failed to become president of Ivory Coast’s football federation (FIF) as Saturday’s long-delayed elections were won by Yacine Idriss Diallo.

Former Chelsea striker Drogba, named in the Premier League’s Hall of Fame this week, was ousted in the first round of voting with just under a fifth of the vote.

In the second round, Diallo, a businessman and current FIF executive member, squeezed out former FIF vice-president Sory Diabaté by 63 votes to 61.

Saturday’s election in the political capital Yamoussoukro had been postponed several times since 2020, primarily over the ongoing issues over the eligibility of certain candidates, with Drogba prominent among them.

After Fifa appointed a normalisation committee to oversee Ivorian football, Drogba’s candidacy – initially rejected over whether he had the requisite number of official backers – was eventually accepted.

Drogba played more than 100 times for the Elephants, including at the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, but was told in August 2020 that he was not eligible to stand in the election.

After intervention from Fifa, the 44-year-old, who won four Premier League titles, four FA Cups and the Champions League across two spells with Chelsea, retained his hopes of running the game in the West African country.

Yet Ivory Coast’s all-time top scorer was eliminated in the first round with 21 votes in the first round, when Diallo (59 votes) and Diabaté (50 votes) made it through to the second round.

Drogba’s achievements and ambitious programme for the development of football in Ivory Coast had raised his popularity, and after his defeat many of his supporters expressed their anger on social media on Saturday.

“The presidents of clubs have just killed Ivorian football, by eliminating Didier Drogba,” one user, called Rosana225, said. “I hope that Ivorians will not take revenge by boycotting the 2023 Afcon.”

Diallo has a mandate of four years and the organisation of the 2023 African Cup of Nations, which Ivory Coast is hosting, will be its first major challenge.

Ivory Coast are two-time champions of Africa, having won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1992 and 2015.
